This movie has a pace that some could think is slow, but its tempo is just right when you see it from start to finish. The movie juggles with dark and deep themes without belittling its significance when a scene creates humor.
Ultimately its a detective film, but it is also a interesting character study that can show how complex characters can be when you watch it for the 2nd time.

Cool concept with straight up demonic themes. Another dark production from our friends in Holy-wood. Talented actors but garbage. Sorry.

Love Adam Brody. He came out of nowhere and delivered on this movie. I don’t even know what to say. Great movie!

I had forgotten what a great actor Adam Brody is, because I hadn’t seen him in films or TV in so long. This is a great mystery that shouldn’t be missed !

I never write reviews, but this movie deserves it. So great. Funny but dark, with a bunch of heart. Adam Brody is great. I don’t know where he’s been, but he needs to be more places.

Haven’t seen Adam Brody in much in recent years but he nails this performance and adds comedic flare to the main characters suffering.

It gets dark, then darker, and the ending was rewarding.

I could talk at length about the novelty of the film’s premise. But, I won’t.
This move is impressive in it’s breath. It says a lot while saying very little. It manages to be witty, quirky, and profound—without mimicking Wes Anderson or Taika Waititi.
If you don’t like understatement and subtlety, you won’t like this film.

This movie wasn’t good. Soooo slow. Had a twist at the end but too late and slow to be good. I also rented because of the reviews but believe me it’s a 1 star movie.

It wasn’t what I expected and even though I kept wanting the pace to pick up, I couldn’t stop watching. You feel compelled to see it to the end, and it doesn’t disappoint.

I was shocked how great this was and I was glad I was able to get a chance to watch this I was just blown away from the story and the performances particularly Adam Brody from ready or not to this he is on a row with outstanding performances even though the end is ok but the entire film is definitely one of the best detective movies for a while I highly recommend the kid detective for people who like a really good mystery definite must buy!!!!!!!

Offbeat, often hilarious, and very dark. Adam Brody brings it - he’s really an underrated actor. Highly recommend for those with a taste for something different, yet still accessible and entertaining.

I saw this in theaters thinking it would be a dumb comedy. The brief time my local theaters was open my options were very limited so I figured what the heck, I’ll watch it. I ended up leaving the theater feeling this was one of my favorite movies of the year. The less you know about it, the better.

The Kid Detective - This was one of my more impulsive selections. I saw it listed at the theater and looked it up. After a few favorable reviews and a few more saying it was just okay, I decided it would look at going if I could find a show that was empty enough. Imagine my surprise when I found a completely empty show at 1 PM. As it would turn out, this one was a private show as nobody else showed up.
What I Didn’t Like
A Slow Start - The pacing was a bit off, especially in the first act as things get established. It look just a bit too long I’m getting to the case and instead focused on Abe’s life as it is.
What I Liked
Characters - Our main characters are all likable. Abe is given a thorough backstory that I appreciated. You’re given more than enough to make you care and root for him. Caroline isn’t given nearly the development Abe is, but then again it’s not her journey. That said, I felt I got enough to be rooting for her.
Story - This is a classic detective story, as the title may hint at. That said, what I liked here is that you follow Abe as he finds clues and makes missteps. Here’s what elevates it though: the execution. It’s done in a way that homages the old detective serials. You get the traditional PI office setting and everything, with a modern twist. The score truly ups the ante though as it sounds similar to the kind of music you’d hear in those older detective serials.
Payoffs - Pay attention to seemingly small things, as most of them will get paid off later on. I was impressed and surprised.
Final Thoughts
The Kid Detective is the kind of flick I wish o saw more of. It’s dark sense of humor is a standout as I don’t see much of that these days. It’s also unique in that it’s a legit detective story, with the twist of seeing Abe’s origins as a kid along with his modern day journey. This film does go to some dark places, but it never crossed the line. It’s not perfect, but the stuff it gets right far outweighs what it doesn’t. Give this one a watch.
